From the Baker Valley the pioneers followed the Oregon Trail over a pass into the Grande Ronde "Great Circle" Valley. Some had a sense of wonder, others of fear, as they looked at the snow-capped Blue Mountains that must be crossed in order to reach Oregon City.

After making it successfully to the summit of the Blue Mountains, many pioneers rested for a day or two at Emigrant Springs before continuing on down the mountains. Emigrant Springs provided a good camping site with pure spring water and grass for the livestock to graze on. Reverend Jason Lee, the first missionary to come to Oregon Country, is credited with discovering the spring in 1834.
